Getting To Know “What’s Happening” at UW

Here are my two greatest links for finding out what’s going on in and around UW:

http://www.studentlifecentre.com/ - This website is run by the Student Life Centre on campus students independent of the university.  As of right now it’s a great place to get more of an informal look at what’s going on. SLC is usually updated as things happen, or shortly before they occur. For example, SLC was liveblogging Bill Gates’ speech when he came to campus. It’s accuracy is great and the relevence of what it covers is dead-on for students. Recent headlines include:

“UW and Laurier Bar Agreement Falls Apart”

“UW Euchre Tournament @ Warrior Weekend”

Or:

“Crazy Gangsta Crane Folding Scandal!”

Another great source is the Daily Buletin. This is put out by UW’s Communications and Public Affairs office - but don’t worry, it doesn’t spend TOO much time “tooting UW’s Horn” - Mainly because this site seems to be intended for staff. But, if you’re looking for short articles on what the university and its staff are doing and what’s going on on campus, it’s a pretty good source. Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the page, where they have a listing of some of the interesting events going on on campus (for staff and students alike).

Recent headlines include:

“UW lists kids’ summer programs”

“Robotics competition this weekend”

“Irish pubs are less smoky” (Talking about a research study my Psych prof from last term led on the behalf of the United Nations)

And, in their “Events section” we find things like:

“Waterloo Co-operative Residence Inc. open house 2 to 6,”

“‘The Apprentice Chef’ competition sponsored by Food Services “learn-to-cook” series, Sunday 6:30 p.m., Ron Eydt Village great hall.”

Hopefully, with some of these links, when you’re sitting there going “what the heck am I going to do?” You’ll have some idea where to find out.
