Calculus of Love

Thought the math geeks might like this.

It’s a google cache - it seems Digg pulverized the server (as, even from the site’s homepage, they link to the google cache version, haha)

I can’t seem to find the image… I’m hoping when the dig smash dies down, you’ll be able to click on “original article” or whatever and see it in all its glory.

EDIT: LINK UPDATED NOW THAT THE DIGSTORM HAS DIED DOWN

Credit Card Statement

You know what I just realized? My credit card statement is a pain in the ass to read.

I just don’t get it.

At the top of the statement, it lists:

Previous Balances + Purchases + Cash Advances + Other Charges + Total Interest - Total Payments/Credits = Statement Balance

I guess it’s just that the statement is designed for people who carry a balance - but I hate seeing my previous balance on THIS statement, right along with what I paid on my last statement. I’d really rather just see what I owe as of THIS DATE and be done with it.

Not to mention, it lists the monthly transactions, their value, and the date that they occurred. I’m OK with all that - but along with THIS months purchases, it includes a negative value for when I paid LAST month’s statement.

It’s confusing - I’d expect to just be able to “run and sum” - run down the columns, add the +es, minus the -tives and, at the end of all that, have how much I owe - but because it shows LAST month’s payment, I can’t do that; I have to specifically exclude that.

I suppose it is indeed a transaction that occurred within this month, but it seems to just add unnecessary confusion…

Now that I’ve sat here staring at it for 20 minutes, I think I’m starting to get it - but it should either be much more obvious, or someone in a math class should’ve handed out some credit card statements and let us take a crack at interpreting ‘em.

I think I know why so many people are in credit card debt… if I didn’t just pay whatever was shown in the “Statement balance” box every time I receive a bill, I think I might get lost…

Our High Dollar

Besides having implications for BCs pot industry (which tends to export a lot of product to the US) the Canadian dollar SHOULD have some effect on our imports - namely consumer goods should be cheaper.

Our finance minister has been putting pressure on retailers to actually give Canadians goods at a price equal to that of the US. Now, the all-powerful retailers (including, presumably, Wal-Mart who is able to guarantee “lower prices every day”) are saying that no, its not retailers that should be pressured - no, the culprits for high prices in Canada are actually manufacturers; and THOSE are the people who need to be pressured.

This is the bit I don’t understand - Consumers are pressuring their goods suppliers for lower prices. Should not THESE consumers, therefore, do the exact same thing and demand lower prices from THEIR suppliers? Isn’t that they way the chain is supposed to work?

I can’t pressure Lipton (makers of crappy soup) to drop prices without also pressuring retailers - what can I do? Still buy Lipton products but ask, pretty please, can you lower prices?

No, the only power I have is to bitch and moan and NOT BUY as much stuff. Sorry if that puts pressure on you too retailers, but that’s the only way I can get to YOUR suppliers.

Wowee!

Just a quick note, in case you already haven’t noticed - your Gmail storage limit is up to more then 4 GB; it’s expanding rapidly and will continue to expand until January 4th, at which point your storage limit will be MORE THEN 6 GB. On Jan. 4th the rate will level off to 3.3 MB/Day; with no set time for it to end.

Awesome! 1GB/year of growth is pretty neat (and, let’s face it - competition being what it is; that rate will probably increase in the future).

Me? I’m still waiting for that “gDrive”…
