Binks Is Here

Commentary on the World

FYI For This Summer

Just to let everybody know, I’ll be back for the third straight summer at my job for the Township. It’ll be the same 8:30-4:30, M-F deal as last time - although this summer I’m hoping I won’t have to put up with two courses, the LSAT, and all manner of other bumps in the road, so it should be much calmer.

It’s a pretty good gig (although minimum wage keeps catching up with my wage…). Evenings and weekends free to do with as I please, and some pretty good coworkers.

Experiments in Sprouts

I’m working on growing my own sprouts.

This is where they’re at after a day:

Look kinda neat!

P.S. - You eat them when they’re done. Need to see how that goes…

Here’s just a part of the harvest, 4 short days later. The actual harvest basically filled the entire jar - I was amazed that it could grow so much so fast!

I also looked up some pricing. A container of alfalfa sprouts (probably the same size as the container in this picture; about 3/4 of my harvest) costs $2. I used a jar I already had, a ring with a strainer on top ($2.50) and two tablespoons out of a bag of seeds (the whole bag was $2.00; I’ll probably get 5 harvests out of it). So, the whole jar probably cost me 40 cents in raw materials.

Then As Now…

Some pictures from City Hall’s lobby. Check out the description of the tablet for sure.

The story generally seems to go that some councilors one day decided to go out and get a stone made up to commemorate City hall. They, however, failed to get the backing of the rest of council. The rest of the council got all pissy and they had an endless fight over whether or not they should pay for the stone, until finally the issue just disappeared.

Glad to know dysfunctional municipal politics isn’t a new phenomena…

Iceberg Ahead!

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this at the end of Allan’s Alley in Stratford:

It was out at one end, where there was no overhang to cover it; and so far as I can tell it is indeed SOLID ice. There were a bunch of little cracked hunks right beside it; I assume it fell off of a roof one sunny day not long ago.

Sure wouldn’t want to have seen what would’ve happened to a person, had that fallen on them. I added the Tim’s cup to try and get a sense of scale.
