Sony Misconception

Kotaku recently reported about Sony’s production rates and how that will affect a global launch, commenting that 9/10’s of the people who go to buy a Playstation 3 will be utterly disappointed. In truth, Sony promised 6 million consoles in circulation by March. Kotaku claims that a global launch will require 10 million (which is probably right).

Now, if their production rate is one million, then, in reality, Sony will have two million consoles ready for a global launch. If you do the math, they’d have to start manufacturing in September to meet their promise for March. One million per month will make two million by the start of November. So, 4/5’s of the people who go to purchase a PS3 will be disappointed. It isn’t really much in defense of Sony, but - given their current promises - it is more accurate than Kotaku’s claim.
