They’ve added an interesting new item to the game that will allow for even more characters to be present in game. Assist trophies look like the trophies collected in game in Super Smash Bros. Melee, except they are now usable items (like Pokeballs). They summon forth minor characters from other series, and can be used to aid you.

They’ve already announced three “Assist Trophy” characters: the Nintendog, Hammer Bros. and Samurai Goroh. I’m thankful that Samurai Goroh has been revealed as an assist trophy, because it means he is not a playable character. He was on my reject list (that has yet to be published).
