Exposure to more and more people from the Computer Science Club and Pure Math Club has depressed me greatly. Too many of them excitedly talk about Starcraft matches in Korea as if they are a sporting event.
Computer games are not a sport. They do not qualify. I can understand that watching them might be entertaining, but to try to lump it in with a sport demeans athletes who actually work really hard physically to compete in their sport of choice.
I mean…I’ve brought it up with some of them before, and they always say that people who play Starcraft get sponsorships and train the same as regular athletes.
But at least the training that athletes do betters them physically, and improves their health. People who play Starcraft (and apparently the people who watch it), just get larger and lazier.
It seems so ridiculous. How did this catch on as a culture?
Before you know it, we’ll have the Spring Digital Olympics. Who wants to join me to represent Canada in Mens Doubles for Wii Sports Tennis. Come on. You know you want to.
