Wow. So, Bioshock 2 has dropped some info about new features, including a new enemy known as the Big Sister (entirely replacing the Big Daddy), and 2 player co-op for the campaign.
On Kotaku, there is a stream of comments that indicate people are not impressed.
If this becomes a co-op game like resident evil 5, I swear I’m turning in my mainstream gamer card.
God, I hate this co-op crap. GIVE ME A GOOD SINGLE PLAYER GAME! Jesus, there’s a place for everything, and this is just wrong.
What’s bad about co-op, at least when it’s integrated into the main game, is that it punishes people who don’t play games multiplayer. I have live, but I don’t really play games with people. I like single player experiences. I don’t have gamers in my area, and I don’t have (nor am looking for) a regular online game partner. I want my games to be just me, doing what I want, for as long as I feel like doing it.
In a game like Resident Evil 5, which is the big offender here, if you don’t want to play with a partner the game forces you to babysit the AI for the entire game. It’s an essentially broken experience, because it requires multiplayer to complete the main story mode of the game.
That’s not Resident Evil, and that’s not Bio-Shock. I hope, hope, hope this is simply a tacked on mode, because I will NOT purchase this if it has any lame forced sidekick thing.
This is interesting, because it shows that: 1. People seem to be opposed to communicating/collaborating with others to enjoy a shared game experience (read: these people have no friends) 2. Everyone is dissing RE5 for having Sheva come with you through most of the game. However, RE4 had Ashley - the President’s daughter - accompany you through most of the game. But in RE4, you had to protect her useless moronic ass from being captured at all costs. At least in RE5, the AI can carry a gun, and will help you out. I don’t see what the big deal is. It is a different kind of shooter experience, and the vocal hardcore gamers seem afraid of that.
I think more games should contain co-op. Some of the most fun I’ve had was playing the Challenge mode in Pikmin 2 or beating the campaign in Timesplitters with a friend. Why would people want to pass that fun up?
