Since everyone on Twitter is deciding to be a real dick about it, I’m going to post something here.
About the iPhone thing: I’m not saying not to get it, and I’m not saying to wait forever. I fail to see how saying “You don’t have to get it Day One” means “Get it Day One + 80 years”. I didn’t realize that time was a discrete variable like that, where the only times that exist are now and each new moment is on an interval of a decade.
The fact of the matter is this: Niamu (and others) have been throwing tweets around about the stresses/difficulty of getting an iPhone on launch day. Well, I wonder, why get it on Day One? Can’t you go out in a month and get the exact same product? No one is going to release any sort of iPhone spoilers that ruin your experience, and none of these people are without a cell phone if they don’t get the new iPhone, so, what’s the rush? People are stressing and struggling to get this product for no reason. So, I say, why not wait a bit? It wont kill you.
All of a sudden, everyone jumps down my throat because, apparently, I’m saying something unheard of. Wait for something? Exercise some patience? Fuck you Jordan! That’s a retarded idea, if ever there was one.
I mean, Danger waits until the end of console life cycles (or used to?) to get video game systems. He got the XBox when it was on the way out. He got it for cheap. And - to my knowledge - has never given a second thought to his decision. Why not apply similar logic to the iPhone? If you get it on Day One (which is hectic) versus a month from Day One (which is less hectic), does your experience with the phone change? Do you get some sort of bragging rights for being one of the first of several thousand to have one? The iPhone 3GS is virtually the same as the 3G, it just has a few new features and runs a little faster. If you’re hoping to show it off to the layman, he probably wont notice any change. If you’re hoping to show it off to your geeky friends, they’ll probably have one too. I just don’t get it.
But I’m sorry if I implied that exercising some patience was even a remote possibility. Dear God, what was I thinking?
Oh, and for the record, Niamu tweeted back and said “Yes, I am no going to deny that I was a little hyped up. But I didn’t get the iPhone 3G and I saw this as relatively necessary.” which makes sense to me. He didn’t chomp at the bit to get the previous iteration, and so now seems like a good enough time to upgrade. Nothing wrong with that. And I get that he was hyped up to get it. I understand that too. But I think his half dozen panic tweets about an iPhone 3GS purchase being a hassle could have been avoided.
I have no problem with the iPhone 3GS. I have on problem with people who want to get it. I don’t even have a problem with people who get it on launch day. I’m just saying that if you find that situation to be stressful, I don’t understand why you would put yourself in that situation. Niamu gave his reasons. End of story. I wasn’t trying to be antagonistic in any way, so why do people come running at me swinging bats as if I’ve offended? Christ people, it isn’t a big deal.
