A Sign of Relief

Most of my exams are done now. It feels like a weight has been lifted. The only exam that remains is Developmental Psychology, which is something like 60 multiple choice questions in two and a half hours. Will it be easy? Most likely.

Last Tuesday, I wrote Astrophysics (PHYS 275) as an in class exam AND handed in the final History of Mathematics group report. Today, I wrote PMATH 332 Complex Analysis (if you’re in the faculty, avoid this course like the plague) and PMATH 330 Logic (if you’re in the faculty, take this course you damn fool!). And they were back-to-back!

It was stressful. Complex was my weaker subject. Logic was my strong suit (please don’t read that as pretentious, mathematical logic has virtually nothing to do with philosophical logic). Anyway, since the exams were back-to-back, I applied for exam relief, which - sadly - only provided me with an extra 45 minutes.

However, I must recommend exam relief. If you have the opportunity, go for it. Even if you don’t need it. I found writing in a small, quiet room with three other people to be much less stressful than the cavernous echoes of the PAC. It was almost relaxing.

Complex kicked my ass (slightly). I’m going to pass the course with a decent mark, but it does not compare to my other classes of the term. In History of Math, the professor has contacted our group asking if he can use our project as an example for future years (flashbacks to Gr. 11 Marketing class). This was a great honour, because I wrote most of the project, and compiled the whole thing in LaTeX. Even if I get less than 93%, I’m still rocking 100% as a final grade in History of Math. I worked my ass off with many late nights and lots and lots and lots of work. But it is worth it to see such a glorious mark on my transcript.

Logic will be a close second for highest mark. I’ve been getting 90s consistently on assignments, got something like an 84% on the midterm and was finished the final exam within an hour, leaving me plenty of time to quadruple-check my answers.

How sweet it is.

Tomorrow, I am going to venture to Conestoga Mall, where I will purchase a copy of Punch-Out!! for the Wii. Tradition dictates that after every term, I purchase a new game as a reward for doing well. Last spring, I went out and bought Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP, which was some delightful old school action. After the fall term, I got Mega Man 9. After the winter term, I got Chrono Trigger DS. Now, I hope to whet my appetite for vintage gaming the same way when I purchase Punch-Out!!. I’ve heard good things.

Since I’m done on August 8th, I’ve got a pretty long summer ahead of me. My house is mostly empty now, so I’m considering moving out soon (because it is just me and a guy who is scary – more on that later). So, I’ll probably be back in Stratford after the 18th before jetting off to Kingston, ON on the 31st (or maybe earlier).

Currently, I’m going up to Katie’s cottage from the 8th to the 11th. Probably going to hit up a show or two at the Festival (I want to see Colm Feore play MacBeth). Then, Katie and I will hopefully get to visit my relatives cottage (which I haven’t been to since they rebuilt it after the fire). I really really want to go kayaking. So much!

Hopefully I get to enjoy my summer before I get my wisdom teeth out on the 20th. It is likely to suck. I’ve been told that it is a world ending pain. I’m making sure to eat all the things I enjoy.

For those keeping track at home, my wisdom teeth will be the second mouth-related surgery that I had in the past two months. I also had some gum tissue grafted over a receiving gum line (which I assure you was not due to poor dental hygiene). That little ordeal left me unable to eat solid foods for fourteen days. I ate nothing but mushed up eggs or tuna, and I lost 10 pounds during that time. :(

I apologize if this post seems like scattered thoughts. I’m trying to string things together into a good story, but frankly, my brain has shut down. I’ll be sure to give you a proper update in the future, and I’ll update regularly when at Queens. And I’ll definitely confirm when I’ll be back in Stratford.

Until next time.

Integers

Integers are a set of numbers with no upper or lower bound. There is no such thing as a first integer.

So, when someone says “The first integer square of integers is 0”, they are incorrect. With no lower bound, there is no such thing as a first integer, nor is there the square of a first integer.

You can say that “the smallest integer square of integers is 0” because any positive or negative integer squared will be greater than 0. One could also claim that “the first integer square of naturals is 0”, because the natural numbers (according to the formal definition) begin at zero, making zero the first natural number.

However - as already stated - it is impossible to define a “first” integer.

I’m just sayin’. There are others who think otherwise, and are willing to fight with tremendous conviction that integers have a lower bound. The particular disagreement that I am referencing is someone on Twitter bullying fans of the Layton experience based on that claim.

Also, I cannot help but wonder if the person doesn’t object because they thought that the Layton Twitter was the product of a big corporation, which the particular writer finds objectionable. Still. Sets of numbers aren’t open to debate.

Attention Faithful Readers

By mid-August, I am hoping to return to more regularly scheduled programming. My exams are finished by August 8th, and I’m going to be at Katie’s cottage until the 11th or something. After that, I’m free and clear to do whatever. I intend to resume rigorous gym attendance, do some packing, template design, and whatever else. Expect a return to more regular updates during that time.

Geocaching

Binks’ incredibly entertaining post reminded me that I wanted to post this somewhere.

Katie and I have placed our very first Geocache. It is in Centennial Park. If you participate in this sort of thing, it is under the name Centennial Love. We placed it for our anniversary, and the damn site was pressuring me for a name.

Anywho, unless it has been raided, it should have some pretty good loot. It isn’t difficult to get to, but it is difficult to find. It was mostly a test drive because I want to place a multicache with some epic riddles in them to get people thinking. Still working on the placement and riddle types (I want them to be challenging, but not waste hours upon hours). Anyway, if you geocache, check out Centennial Love, if you’re into that sort of thing.

UW Logo Facelift (Update)

According to the people who met with UW representatives on this matter, the faculty logos aren’t being used. Frankly, this is a bummer, as they were the best part of the new campaign.

This is also confusing, because the banners around campus seem to tie into these logos quite well.

So, now I’m just confused. Has the Facebook protest group gone and made this worse?
